In Term 4, Year 4 hope that May the Force be with You

Mathematical Understanding

This term we will  focus on:


The introduction of column addition and subtraction to add and subtract larger numbers. 

Practising using the grid method and chunking, when multiplying and dividing.

We will be learning the 6 and 8 times tables.

Decimal numbers—tenths and hundredths and the fraction equivalent.

Fractions of quantity / amount.

 Data Handling

Collecting, organising, presenting, analysing and interpreting data in tables, tally charts, pictograms and bar charts.

Shape and Space and Measures

Draw rectangles and measure and calculate the perimeter and area.

 Angles - Know that a complete turn is 360°, a half turn is 180° and a right angle 90°.  Acute angles (less than 90°_ and Obtuse angles (greater than 90° and less than 180°).


Understanding English, Communication and Languages


Play scripts - How play scripts are written. Writing our own scripts to go alongside our own animations.

Fiction - Stories with morals or dilemmas.

 Our Spelling this term will be:  

To investigate and learn to spell words with suffixes and understand how suffixes can change the function of a word.


Year 3 & 4 Play - Peter Pan

At the end of term we will be performing the play Peter Pan.


Time, events during the day, birthdays and directions on the compass (related to cities in France).


 We will continue to work on our animation topic. The children will finish their animation films, record soundtracks to accompany them and edit their films. We will celebrate their work by having a class screening  after which the children will write a review of one of the films.

This term we will focus on forces. 
This will include learning about:

Measuring force

Using friction

Water resistance

Air resistance

Understanding Physical Development, Health and Well Being

PE will take place on Mondays (Tag Rugby) and Tuesdays (Gymnastics). Please make sure your child has a PE kit in school at all times,  (PE days may change) including plimsolls for indoors and trainers for outdoor lessons. A warm jumper and tracksuit bottoms are also necessary.


 Understanding the Arts


Create music and sound effects to support our animations.

Art and D.T.

Researching and making flip books, zoetropes and thaumatropes.
