Reception Class Weekly Newsletter ~ 30th June

Words of the week: Chrysalis, habitat, cocoon, lifecycle

Personal, Social and Emotional development- This week we have been working hard to be part of a team. The children are now in tidy up teams and have areas that they are responsible for. This is our class challenge for the rest of the school year. Each team has to work together to tidy up their area as well as they can. It has been great to see the children working as part of a team and enjoying celebrating their successes.

Communication and Language- We have been talking about the Hungry Caterpillar this week and have had some great discussions around sequencing the story and looking carefully at the illustrations in the book. The children have once again made some great comments on the illustrations, noting that the pages get bigger to coincide with the amount of food that the caterpillar eats. We have also been thinking of all the different words we can use to describe the different fruits that we have touched, smelt and tasted today.

Physical development- The children have been preparing for sports day again this week and have been balancing quoits on their head whilst walking, running and throwing objects in hoops and buckets. We have also talked about healthy foods and have identified foods in the story that we think are healthy. Today the children practised their cutting skills and did a great job of cutting up the fruit to taste.

Literacy- We have been exploring the story of’ Rainbow fish’ this week and have enjoyed talking about how the Rainbow fish behaved in the story. In our writing sessions we have been busy practising writing red words and the special friends sounds. Please continue to support your child with their writing at home.

Maths- This week we have been learning about the days of the week, this links with the story of the hungry caterpillar. We have been sequencing the days of the week and the months of the year and talking about ordering familiar events in our lives. We have also been voting for our favourite fruit and made our own pictogram to show our findings.

Expressive art and design- The children have been very busy making their own Hungry Caterpillar pictures this week and their drawing and colouring skills are really coming on. They have also enjoyed engaging in lots of imaginative play this week and have been putting on shows for us. These have included dance shows, singing shows and magic tricks. It is fantastic to see the children so confident and eager to perform.

Understanding the World-
We have been talking about the lifecycle of a caterpillar this week and in particular trying hard to use the correct words to describe the different stages. On Thursday our caterpillars arrived and we have ben busily observing them and noting any changes. The children have predicted that they will have grown lots by Monday.

Transition to year 1- There will be a meeting on Wednesday 5th July for Foundation Stage parents to talk about the transition to year one. This will be at 2.30pm in the year one classroom. This is an important meeting and will be a great opportunity for you to hear about the expectations for year one.

Thank you to everyone who kindly donated fruit for our fruit tasting today. The children really enjoyed using their senses to explore the fruit and then cutting it up and tasting it.

Sun safety-Please could you make sure your child has a water bottle in school every day. As the weather is getting warmer (hopefully!) please could you make sure your child has a sunhat and sun cream in school. Sun cream should be named and we will remind the children to apply it on hot days. We are not allowed to

apply it for them and do not supply sun cream, your child must bring in their own sun cream, it cannot be shared.

Outdoor area-Can I remind you that the outdoor area is not to be used before or after school by children and younger/older siblings and relatives. Thank you for remembering this.

· Wednesday 5th July- Meeting for new year 1 parents.

· Friday 7th July- Transfer morning. Reception pupils will spend the morning in year 1.

· Saturday 8th July- School Fete

· Week beginning 10th July- Reports sent home to parents

· Tuesday 18th July-Sports day and family picnic

· Friday 21st July- End of term, school finishes at 1.15pm.

Maths: Adding two numbers

Reading books-As we approach the end of term we need to start collecting reading books and school story books in. Please could you check at home and return any books that belong to school. We will continue to change reading books until Thursday 13th July and will then collect in reading books and reading records after that. This is to ensure that we have all books returned in preparation for September.

Thank you for your continued support
