FS Update 16.10.15

Foundation Stage update 16th October 2015

Words of the week: Measure and estimate

Communication, Language and Literacy
This week we have been exploring the story of the Three Little Pigs, learning how to tell it to each other and adding expression when taking on a role. We are really developing our storytelling skills and the children are now starting to ask if we can tell a familiar story again, using actions. This week we have also started to learn our letter sounds. We have been learning how to say and write the sounds ‘m and a’. Thank you for bringing in objects for the sound table.

Personal, Social and Emotional development
As part of our collective worship and circle time this week, we have been discussing friendship. Particularly what makes a good friend and how we can demonstrate being a good friend to others. We have also been reflecting upon all the friends that we have made since we started school and the qualities that we admire in our friends.

Physical development
In our warm up for P.E we have been exploring all things animal related, making up our own moves for particular animals, walking tall for a giraffe, jumping for monkeys and much more. In the main part of our P.E session we have continued to develop our ball skills, throwing and catching them with a partner and throwing them towards a target. We are also developing our fine motor control through our dough disco sessions and next week we will thinking of our own moves to warm up our hand muscles before writing.

This week we have been learning to measure using unifix cubes, we have also been estimating how many unifix cubes we will need to measure objects. On Thursday we estimated how tall one of the children is and then measured to see who had the closest estimation. We have also enjoyed counting lots, counting how many children are in class, how many children would like milk, how many packed lunches and writing the corresponding numbers. It would be great if you could continue to support your child with this at home.

Expressive art and design
The children have had great fun creating their own pictures using paint, they have been inspired by our theme of the week, the three little pigs. We have also started to think about designing our own houses for the three little pigs, this week we have been discussing what materials we would use and have started to draw our designs, next week we will make them and test them.

Understanding the world
We have enjoyed making our own bird feeders this week and talking about why it is important to look after birds. We had to think about the best places to hang the bird feeders so that the birds could easily find them, we are looking forward to observing the birds eating their food very soon.

This week we have also enjoyed creating our own mud kitchen. Thank you for all your kind donations of pans and spoons to use in the mud kitchen. This will be a permanent fixture in our garden, so any donations of unwanted spoons, plastic bowls, plates, cutlery and anything else kitchen related would be very welcome.

Starting today your child will be bringing home their phonics homework every Friday. This will be the letter sounds that we have been learning in class during the week. Please support your child in practising writing the letters and finding objects beginning with those sounds. All homework should be returned by the following Friday. Please see the handout from the parent workshop for more information.

Talk homework-
After the October half term I will be sending home weekly talk homework, we talked about this at the parent workshop but I will also send home a letter explaining the purpose of talk homework and how to help your child.

Parent workshop
Thank you to everyone who was able to make our parent workshop on Wednesday. For those of you who were unable to make it we will be sending out the notes via parentmail today and a copy will be available on our class page of the school website.

Next week
Phonics: s and d
Please bring in something for the sound table.

We will continue to focus on the story of the three little pigs and our outdoor focus will be builders. We would still love to have a builder come and talk to the children about their job. Please let me know if you can help us.

Just a reminder that school finishes next Thursday for the school holiday. We will return on Monday 2nd November.

Thank you for your continued support
