Foundation Stage Weekly Update 5th February 2016

Words of the week: Kandinsky, artist

Welcome to Hikmat, who has joined our class this week. The children have been fantastic at making her feel welcome.
Communication and Language
I have been really impressed by how responsible the children have been this week. They have helped one another when someone has found something tricky and they have talked through any problems they have in order to find a solution. During our Monday morning news sessions the children have been keen to share their news and are beginning to ask questions of others in order to further their understanding.

Personal, Social and Emotional development
The children have been demonstrating their talents this week, talking about things that they are particularly good at and recognising the hard work that they put in to achieve their talent. We have also been discussing the goals that we set ourselves at the start of the term and have been reflecting on how well we are doing with these and the work that we still want to do in order to achieve our goals.

Physical development
On Tuesday we worked with our year 3 buddies to learn a new football themed dance, building on each new move to create our own performance. In our PE session we have continued to develop our ball skills, concentrating on passing to a partner and maintaining good control. Next week we will be learning our own Chinese dragon dance to help us celebrate the Chinese New Year.

In our phonics sessions we have been practising reading our red words and writing simple sentences. Towards the end of the week we have been putting our phonic knowledge to good use, reading short sentences that contain the sounds of the week. We are continuing to practise writing our names each day and this is something that you can support your child with at home.

This week we have been learning how to add two numbers to find the total. We have used different counting and sorting equipment to help us practically solve our number problems. The children then used a number line to help them find the correct number to write. We are continuing to learn how to write a number sentence, this could be something that you could support your child with at home.

Expressive art and design
We have been looking at the work of Kandinsky this week and have been focussing on the concentric circles that he uses and the bright colours. The children are in the process of creating their very own Kandinsky inspired masterpieces, once they have all dried we will put them on display for you to see. In our music sessions we have continued to learn some traditional songs from other cultures and are now keen performers.

Understanding the World
We have started to discuss Chinese New Year this week, thinking about how it is celebrated and why the colours red and gold are so important. Next week we will be learning more about the Chinese New Year, making lanterns and learning a dragon dance.

Igloo- Our milk carton igloo is almost finished but we still need more milk cartons in order to be able to put the roof on. Please could you continue to bring in clean milk cartons. Thank you.

Next week
We will be learning about the Chinese New Year and will be tasting some Chinese food on Friday, noodles, vegetarian spring rolls, prawn crackers. Please could you let me know if you do not want your child to taste any of the food.

Phonics: nk. This will be the last of the set 1 speed sounds and we will move onto set 2 after the half-term break.
Red words: no, go
Maths: subtraction
Focus: Chinese New Year

International evening
Don’t forget to join us on Thursday for our whole school international evening.

Thank you for your continued support.

Talk Homework

Over the weekend please discuss this as a family. We will spend time discussing it as a class on Monday.

Look at the Chinese zodiac and find out what year you and members of your family were born.

What does your zodiac sign mean for you?
