Reception Class Weekly Update ~ 10th November

Value of the term: Enthusiasm

Personal, Social and Emotional development- This week we have talked about how we can demonstrate enthusiasm. The children had some really good ideas about why we need to be enthusiastic about learning and what we can do to make sure we are showing this.

Communication and Language- We have been talking about firework night and how we can keep safe. The children are developing their listening skills and are becoming better at listening to each other. We are working on talk partners and the skills needed to engage in a mutual conversation. We have talked lots a about the importance of sharing a conversation and listening to each other.

Physical development- In our PE session this week we have been practising jumping in and out of hoops and throwing bean bags into hoops. We have also been working in teams to complete tasks. We continue to develop our fine motor control on a daily basis and have been perfecting our pencil grip. Below is a picture to help you to help your child with their pencil grip.

Literacy- This week we finished the set1 speed sounds with ‘ng’ and ‘nk’.Now we have taught all the sounds we will go back and revise them. The children need to be secure with all the sounds before we can move on to the next set of sounds. In our phonics sessions we have been using Fred talk to read VC and CVC words and are beginning to use our Fred fingers to help us write some simple words. Please support your child at home with learning their sounds and forming all the letters correctly.

Maths- We have been counting and recognising numbers to 10 and then 20 this week. The children have been ordering numbers to 10 and then 20. It has been great to see the children using numicon to add two numbers together and find different ways to make numbers using numicon. It would be great if you could support your child with counting and recognising numbers.

Understanding the World- This week we have continued to talk about how we can keep ourselves safe around fireworks. We have talked about why it is important to know our address and who we would phone if there was a fire. As it is remembrance Sunday we have also talked about poppies and why we wear them.

Expressive art and design- The children have been creating lots of lovely independent art work this week and it has been lovely to see them expressing themselves and being creative. I have observed some fantastic model making this week and the children have been inventing characters and stories for their models.
