Foundation Stage Weekly Update ~ 9th December 2016
Words of the week: Christmas, Nativity, Advent
This letter is slightly shorter than normal because we have spent quite a lot of the week preparing for our Christmas Nativity.
Personal, Social and Emotional development- This week we have continued to think about how we can be enthusiastic learners. We have also talked about friendship and have all tried to demonstrate kindness and respect to others.
Communication and Language-. This week we have enjoyed reading lots of Christmas stories, thank you to everyone who brought a story in to share with the class. These have started lots of discussions about different Christmas traditions and how people celebrate Christmas. It is fantastic to see the children sharing their ideas with confidence and a real awareness for their audience
Physical development-We have enjoyed being outside this week and talking about our heart rate and why it beats faster after we have been running. We are also continuing to develop our pencil control and this is something that we would like you to help your child with at home.
Literacy- This week we have been using our ‘Fred talk’ to read words that begin or end with the sounds we have been learning this week. We introduced the ‘sh’ sound and as there are two letters that only make one sound we call them ‘special friends’. Our writing is really improving and the children are able to hear more sounds in a word when they are writing. Do look at our writing working wall for the children’s latest piece of writing.
Maths- This week we have been counting, recognising numbers on our advent calendar, counting animals in the twelve days of Christmas stories and comparing and ordering numbers.
Expressive art and design-This week we have been busy making our Christmas crafts to sell. The children have had to be very careful when decorating their Christmas baubles and we hope you enjoy them. We have also enjoyed singing the songs for our Christmas play and during free time I have heard lots of children continuing to sing the songs and putting on shows.
Understanding the World- We have been talking about Christmas this week and why we celebrate it. We have also been talking about changes that we have noticed in the environment, particularly ice and water.
Christmas play-Thank you to everyone who came to watch the children perform in the Nativity. It was great to see so many of you there and the children were keen to show you their fantastic singing. I hope you will all agree that they did an amazing job.
Reports-Please check your child’s book bag for their autumn term report.
Please can I remind you to return your child’s phonics homework each week in their clear folder. We are noticing that not many children are bringing back their homework each week. This week we only had half the class returning their completed homework. This is an important continuation of their phonics teaching in class and we really value your support in helping your child. Only the sheets from the previous week need to be returned. All other sheets can be kept at home. Homework should be returned by Thursday each week.
Mrs Bruce will be teaching the class on Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon.
Thursday 15th December-Christmas carol concert.
Friday 16th December- Class Christmas party and Christmas jumper day. School finishes at 1.15pm
Thank you for your continued support.
