Reception Class Weekly Newsletter ~ 7th July

Words of the week: Chrysalis, habitat, cocoon, lifecycle.

Personal, Social and Emotional development-This week we have continued to work hard to be part of a team. The children have been working in teams for tidy up time and it has been a great success. We have also been talking lots about the transition to year one and in particular the things that we are looking forward to and any worries that we have. All the children had a lovely morning in year one this morning.

Communication and Language- We have continued to talk about the Hungry Caterpillar this week and what their favourite food is. They have also enjoyed sharing facts about caterpillars.

Physical development- The children have been preparing for sports day again this week and have been balancing quoits on their head whilst walking, running, practising for the egg and spoon race and throwing objects in hoops and buckets. We have also talked about healthy foods and have identified foods in the story that we think are healthy.

Literacy- We have been exploring the story of’ The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ this week and have enjoyed talking about the different fruits and foods that he eats. In our writing sessions we have been busy practising writing red words and the special friends sounds. Please continue to support your child with their writing at home.

Maths- We have practised our days of the week and months of the year this week and have been making sure we can correctly sequence them. We have also been counting on and back as well as adding two numbers to find a total.

Expressive art and design- The children have enjoyed colouring in hungry caterpillar pictures this week and then drawing their own pictures based on the illustrations in the book. We have also made our own butterfly paintings.

Understanding the World- We have been talking about the lifecycle of a caterpillar this week and in particular trying hard to use the correct words to describe the different stages. We have been closely observing the changes in our Caterpillars and looking carefully at the chrysalis that Kurt’s Dad very kindly brought in for us. The children were fascinated by it and spend lots of time looking and listening to it.

Thank you to Kurt’s Dad for coming in and giving a great talk on the lifecycle of a butterfly. The children really enjoyed it and have been talking about it ever since.

Sun safety-Please could you make sure your child has a water bottle in school every day. As the weather is getting warmer (hopefully!) please could you make sure your child has a sunhat and sun cream in school. Sun cream should be named and we will remind the children to apply it on hot days. We are not allowed to apply it for them and do not supply sun cream, your child must bring in their own sun cream, it cannot be shared.

Outdoor area-Can I remind you that the outdoor area is not to be used before or after school by children and younger/older siblings and relatives. Thank you for remembering this.

Reading books-As we approach the end of term we need to start collecting reading books and school story books in. Please could you check at home and return any books that belong to school. We will continue to change reading books until Thursday 13th July and will then collect in reading books and reading records after that. This is to ensure that we have all books returned in preparation for September.
