FS Update 03.02.2017

Foundation Stage Weekly Update ~ Friday 3rd February
Personal, Social and Emotional development- We have been determined to be determined learners this week and not give up when things are tough. We have also been thinking about how we can challenge ourselves in our learning. This is our class challenge of the week and we have tried hard to try new things that challenge us rather than always doing something that is easy. In the coming weeks we will be talking about how we can develop a growth mind set and why this is important.

Physical development -In our gym session this week we have explored different ways of moving along a bench, using all of our body to support us. We have also tried to successfully negotiate space by moving in different ways. This week we have also worked on our fine motor control and have been moving our fingers and exercising them so that they are ready for writing. Please support your child at home in developing their pencil grip and good pencil control. If you would like any help with this then please come and see me.

Communication and Language- We have talked about Chinese New Year celebrations this week and it has been great to hear the children showing a real interest in the lives of others as well as comparing it to their own lives. Whilst playing, I have heard the children engaging in great conversations about Chinese New Year and also about determination. They have been encouraging each other in order to succeed.

Maths -In our maths lessons this week we have been learning to recognise one more and one less than a given number to 10 and then 20. We have talked about using a number line to help us check whether our answer is correct. I am really impressed with the children’s developing counting skills. You can support your child with the maths by:

· Counting forwards and backwards.

· Counting and sorting objects.

· Counting objects that cannot be moved.

· Recognising one more and one less than a given number (initially to 10 and then 20 and beyond)

Literacy- On Monday we wrote about the talent show, we had to think about all the things that we could remember and what we would write for someone who hadn’t been to the talent show. It is great to see just how much the children’s writing has improved and if you look at our writing working wall then I am sure you will be able to see that as well. At the moment we are focussing on the following things:

· Ensuring we can write our name clearly so that other people can read it.

· Forming all letters correctly.

· Hearing and writing the first sound in a word correctly.

· Writing more than one sound in a word correctly.

Expressive art and design -It has been great to see the children spending extended periods of time drawing their favourite animal from the Chinese animal race. The detail they have used is amazing and it is great to see them so inspired. We have also made our own Chinese lanterns to display.

Understanding the world- We have continued to learn about Chinese New Year this week and how it is celebrated in China and around the World. The children have enjoyed talking about the year in which they were born and some have clearly been talking to you about it at home, which is great.

Baby photos- At the start of next term we will be looking at how we have changed since we were babies. Please could every child bring in a named photo of them as a baby for our display.

Next week:

Phonics: We will be revising all the sounds that we know (set 1 and set 2). 
We will be exploring non-fiction texts and experimenting with floating and sinking.

Homework-Please can I remind you to return your child’s empty homework folder by Friday morning. This morning we only had 11 homework folders returned. Can you check your child’s book bag at the end of each day for letters and homework. We are noticing a lot of letters are crumpled up in book bags and this means that you could be missing key information.

Home-School news books-Just a reminder that if you have written in your child’s book then it needs to be handed to a member of the FS staff in the morning. We will then reply and put it back in your child’s book bag for the end of the day.

- Please do not let your children play in the garden whilst you are waiting to drop off or pick up your children from school.
