Foundation Stage Weekly Update ~ 1st July 2016

Words of the week: enthusiasm, lifecycle
Personal, Social and Emotional development-Our challenge this week has been to ensure that the classroom and lunch hall are tidy. We have been thinking about how we would feel if someone left our classroom in a mess and what we can do to ensure that our classroom and the rest of the school stays tidy. I was really impressed with the whole class on Thursday when they helped us to set up for the new children who were coming to visit in the afternoon. This shows how responsible and caring they are, they really are a class to be proud of.

Communication and Language-We have had some fantastic conversations this week about the story of the very hungry caterpillar and have been sequencing the story correctly. The children have also engaged in some fantastic conversations whilst playing this week, sharing their ideas and building upon the ideas of their peers.

Physical development- This week we have continued to work on our letter formation, this continued to be important and it would be great if you could continue to encourage your child to do this at home. Outside we have enjoyed lots of physical play and have been racing one another.

Literacy- In our literacy sessions this week we have focused on distinguishing between a fiction and non-fiction text and discussing how we can tell the difference. We have also been thinking about how we can use our everyday expectations for writing every time we do a piece of writing.

Maths-In our maths sessions this week we have continued to focus on our counting skills and have been counting odd and even numbers. In our more practical sessions we have been adding and subtracting two numbers to find a total.

Expressive art and design- This week we have enjoyed creating our own 3D butterfly . We used wire to create the shape of a butterfly and tissue paper and glue to add layers in order to create our own unique butterfly. We are hoping to hang our butterfly alongside our caterpillar , in the classroom for you all to see. The children have also enjoyed some extra music time with Mrs Bruce this week

Understanding the World- We have enjoyed exploring the lifecycle of a caterpillar this week. The children have been really keen to watch our caterpillars and spent lots of time observing them as they spun their cocoons. We are hoping that they emerge from their cocoons as butterflies very soon.

Reading books will continue to be changed next week but after next Friday we will be collecting all reading books in and will therefore not be changing them after Friday 8th July. Please check at home and return any school books that you might have.
